Certified Six Sigma Black Belts are professionals fluent in the language of Six Sigma training. At any time, a Black Belt can rehearse the Six Sigma philosophies and principles integral to a successful Six Sigma program.  Six Sigma Black Belts undergo rigorous Six Sigma training, and have to meet strict minimum expectations and pass an accompanying exam. In order to achieve this status, Black Belt hopefuls are required to complete two projects with signed affidavits. If two projects are not available, a Black Belt is required to complete one project and have at least three years of previous work experience in one or more areas within the Six Sigma Body of Knowledge.

Minimum expectations for a Six Sigma Black Belt include the ability to explain all Six Sigma philosophies, principles, systems and tools and identify their impact on various business processes. They must understand the chain of leadership and the various Six Sigma roles and responsibilities of those roles. Also, they must be able to define benchmarking and understand financial and ways to measure business performance.

Black Belts analyze customer complaints and comments in order to make the overall experience better. To do this they need to understand basic techniques and processes as well as probability and distribution.

Six Sigma Black Belt training and testing will require an individual to define the seven classic wastes, multivariate tools, and define terms such as kaizen, kaizen blitz, and theory of constraints. They must also be able to explain common DFSS and DFX methodologies.

All of this testing is designed to prepare a Six Sigma Black Belt for their integral role in the Six Sigma infrastructure as a team leader and business resource. Lower level employees, known as Green Belts, continually rely on the knowledge of their designated Black Belt, making the effective execution of these responsibilities a major factor in the success or failure of Six Sigma implementation in a business.
